When he woke, Bill found himself still restrained, but in a different way, and in complete darkness and total silence.

His legs were bound by tape to the legs of a chair. The tape crackled when he moved. His arms were similarly attached to the arms of the chair. Tape also secured his torso. The chair was padded, leather over metal tubing, and was fixed to the floor. However much Bill bucked and heaved he could not shift the thing. All he succeeded in doing was making the pain in his chest worse, hot knives stabbing with every breath. He felt woozy, as if hungover, and a sense of dread and anxiety clouded his thoughts. He was coming down from the effects of the tranq Stella had used on him. Powerful, evil stuff.

Where the hell was he? He peered into the darkness, but it was absolute.

‘Hello?’ he called out. ‘Hello!’

His words fell as if into a deep well. There was no echo and he got no sense of the size of the space he was in. The place was odourless, all he could smell was his own stale sweat. It started to unnerve him, but he fought the feeling away. Disorientation – standard interrogation technique. Damned if he was going to let it discombobulate him.

As to who was doing the interrogation, there was no mystery there. Stella’s boss. Dieter Allegro. He was in Allegro’s lair – wherever that was. Now he would find out if the fella was as bad as Sir Gerard thought, or a mere misguided entrepreneur as Vik seemed to think.

Vik. Bill’s heart beat faster at the thought of her, pumping blood through his body, spurring him to action, action he could not take. He felt helpless, impotent. He hoped she had got away. Got away with the laptop.

Without fanfare, a pale blue sphere appeared in front of him. About the size of a person’s face, it hovered there, drifting slowly from side to side. It was hard to work out what is was. A balloon? Some sort of projection?

A voice spoke, seeming to come from all directions in the darkness, and the sphere pulsed with blue light in time with the words.

‘Who are you?’

The voice was deep, male, and without accent. It sounded artificially replicated.

Bill didn’t immediately reply. An easy question for most people. Not him. Not now.

‘Who are you?’

The blue sphere pulsed more brightly, hurting Bill’s eyes.

‘My name is… Gareth Clitheroe.’

Immediately, the steel tubes of the chair vibrated, sending a series of brutal electric shocks down Bill’s arms and legs and up his spine.

He screamed. The pain in his chest stabbed again, but it was nothing compared to the juddering bolts of electricity that slammed through his body.

The shocks subsided. They had only lasted a few seconds, but the pain had been agonizing.

‘Who are you?’ intoned the voice.

‘Calum Bence.’

Bill braced himself.

Nothing happened, then the shocks came again. This time they were a mere gentle tingling. As if the lie detector, or whatever it was he was wired up to, knew he wasn’t telling the entire truth.
